From as early as she can remember, Merel was never without her imagination. Growing up in a big, artistic family in Amsterdam, creativity ran through her veins—just like her mother, whose own paintings filled their home, set in a household of sixteen people: children, grandchildren, and her beloved mother.

She sewed clothes for her dolls and stuffed animals, turning scraps of fabric into little masterpieces. Her world was always full of color, texture, and possibility.

Merel’s childhood laid the foundation: the spirit of freedom, the joy of making, and the beauty of hand-crafted things. Her mother’s artistic influence was everywhere. As she grew, Merel realized that making was more than a hobby—it was her calling.

Later, her path led her to Ibiza, a place that matched her inner world: vibrant, open, unconfined. She met Alok on Benirrás beach, and together they embarked on a journey that would give birth to something extraordinary: World Family Ibiza.

Travel became her source of inspiration. Merel and her family journeyed across the globe—to Mexico, Morocco, India, Thailand—gathering fabrics, embroideries, and stories from local artisans and remote communities.

She has said that behind her designs lies not just beauty, but deep respect for the craftsperson who made them.

Building a Bohemian Kingdom

Back on Ibiza, Merel (with Alok) started small: a humble stall at the Las Dalias market, selling uniquely crafted gypsy bags made from the treasures they’d collected on their travels. But something magical happened: people loved them. Her first bag, a one-of-a-kind piece, started a craze—what began as a small market project became an international phenomenon.

Today, World Family Ibiza is much more than just fashion. It’s a universe. The family designs shoes, accessories, interior pieces, and clothing—all handcrafted, vibrant, and rooted in craft traditions. Every piece is unique. Merel refuses to copy; she insists that every design must come from her heart and imagination.

Family, Evolution & Legacy

World Family Ibiza isn’t just Merel’s dream—it’s a family legacy. Her children are deeply embedded in the business. Two daughters have taken on leadership roles: one with the creative vision, the other driving the business side.

Merel describes her design process as deeply intuitive: she doesn’t forecast seasons. Instead, she creates in the moment, letting her inspiration flow freely.

She also values balance. Working with family has its challenges, she admits—but for her, the key is love and respect. Alok organizes and manages logistics; Merel stays in her element, designing. Meanwhile, their children each contribute in design, operations, and sales.

Philosophy & Style

Merel’s philosophy is deeply rooted in freedom. In her words: she likes to “tear down her own barriers” and let her style evolve. She encourages people to look in the mirror every day, to try on colors, shapes, moods—and to discover what truly resonates with them.

She also embraces contradictions. Known for her colorful fringed skirts, Merel surprises people when she shows up in ripped jeans and sneakers. For her, there’s no “one way” to be: style is fluid; life is fluid.
