SPIRIT OF THE MOUNTAINS
Rooted in nature, led by women, born in the mountains.
The story behind the Devi Coat & the Saira Coat.
Behind every ZAZI coat lies a journey, one that begins with a single thread, hand-spun by women and transformed into a garment that reflects their craft.
The day begins in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, where soft wool is gathered from local sheep raised in the high-altitude terrain of the Indian Himalayas. The raw wool is then carefully carded by hand, a traditional process that detangles and aligns the fibres, preparing them for spinning. Once carded, the wool is spun into thread using wooden charkhas. The process is slow and intentional. No machines are used, only handwork, knowledge, and traditions passed down from woman to woman.
Natural dyes are made in small batches by gently heating plant powders such as walnut shells, berries, and onion skins in water. The colours develop slowly, soft greens, deep browns, and earthy pinks from roots. The wool rests in the dye, soaking in nature’s palette.
Kullvi Whims is our partner in craft, a women-led collective from the Himalayan village of Naggar, where tradition lives in every thread. Since 2012, they have kept alive the skills of spinning, weaving, and knitting, passed down through generations and deeply connected to their mountain home.
Kullvi Whims began with 15 women. Today, more than 300 women and artisans are part of a complete, local supply chain. Every step, from raw wool to finished coat, takes place within their community.
Pre-order allows time. Time to dye. Time to weave. Time to honour.
No two coats are the same. Colour, texture, and shape shift slightly, a gentle reminder that each piece is handmade and belongs to its own unique process.
