A Note from Belinda, Founder of Artijaan
"Buying a Zazi coat directly supports our work to create livelihoods for women amidst crisis and shrinking funding in Afghanistan. When you wear this coat, imagine you are part of a greater story — of women who may not have a public voice, but who, as breadwinners, are finally listened to within their communities. Seeing their work reflected on Zazi’s social media makes their faces shine with pride. For me, that’s the real power of this collaboration: a coat that carries dignity, beauty, and meaning. Thank you for giving these women pride, light, and a moment of escape through the coat you are buying today. Women who support other women are my favorite kind of women — and my favorite kind of humanity."
"My custom coat arrived yesterday and i’m in awe by how beautiful this coat is. From the stiching, to the patterns, to the fabric; I feel like a Goddess in it."
"A few weeks ago I got my latest custom coat and it’s a dream. I can recommend to get in touch with the ZAZI team before ordering the coat. The customers’ service is sublime and they really want you to be truly happy with your pieces. Thank you very much!"
"An absolute pleasure to create my dream coat with the ZAZI team! It is deeply felt how everything they do is with love. Could not be happier!"

end of a chapter
We started with a dream: to bring the beauty of centuries-old craft to the world in a way that empowers the women who create it. Suzani, meaning “needlework” in Persian, carries generations of wisdom and artistry within each stitch. Traditionally crafted by women across Central Asia, every flower, vine, and symbol is woven with meaning – a prayer, a wish, a legacy passed down from mother to daughter.
Our very first ZAZI coats were made from these extraordinary hand-embroidered textiles. What began as a handful of designs quickly grew into a global movement. The Suzani coat became the heartbeat of our brand, loved by women everywhere who wanted to wear something deeply personal, cultural, and powerful.
But at its core, the Suzani coat has always been about more than a beautiful coat. Through our partnership with Artijaan, led by Belinda, and the incredible women artisans in Afghanistan, every coat has supported livelihoods, preserved traditional craftsmanship, and created bridges between cultures. Each piece carried not only a story of beauty but also one of resilience, community, and hope.

From Vintage Textiles to Coats of Meaning
For our ZAZI coats, Artijaan sources vintage Suzani embroideries in the north-west of Afghanistan, linking them to our workshop in Kabul. In this way, we connect rural craft traditions with urban production, bridging communities that would otherwise remain apart. Every coat begins with a textile carrying generations of artistry, and is brought to life by the women who cut, stitch, and finish it in Kabul. What you wear is not only a piece of fashion but also a story of connection — between past and present, countryside and city, artisan and wearer.
In the Kabul workshop, around 15 women are currently creating the ZAZI coats. Many are the sole breadwinners for their families, and through this work they earn on average three times the local income. Each woman’s wages support an extended household of 5–6 people — covering food, education, and healthcare. Behind every coat is not just one artisan, but an entire family whose lives are sustained by her craft. What may look like a single garment on the outside is, in truth, a lifeline woven with dignity and pride.

Building Livelihoods, Preserving Heritage
In Afghanistan today, craft remains one of the last sectors where women can still work. Amidst economic collapse, aid cuts, and overlapping crises, women have become the main breadwinners in many families — reshaping community life in profound ways. Through Artijaan, our local partner, we provide more than just jobs. The workshop in Kabul is a safe haven where women gather, share stories, and support each other. It is a small bubble of light and dignity in an otherwise heavy reality. Here, women are not only earning but also reclaiming space, strength, and solidarity.
In the past three years, Artijaan has supported more than 3,000 artisans across seven provinces. By linking rural and urban communities to international markets, they help transform craft into reliable income. This support ensures families can afford food, schooling, healthcare, and daily survival. Just as importantly, it allows Afghan craft traditions to live on — not only as cultural heritage but as a source of independence and resilience. Our mission is to ensure that every embroidery, weave, or stitch represents both survival in the present and hope for the future.
